Default Mitsubishi Transfer Case Recall

What is the transfer case recall?

The transfer case recall is a simple problem that can cause major damage to you or your car. Theres nothing wrong with the transfer case itself, its the brass plug in the center of the transfer case yoke. This plug can leak and if enough gear oil is lost the transfer case will lock up. Low levels of gear oil stemming from this leakage can cause premature wear on your transfer case.

There is a recall on this issue for all year AWD Diamond Star cars, for both Mitsu / Eagle / Plymouth. The recall states that :
  • 1. The dealership in question will inspect the transfer case yoke to determine if there is a leak or not.
    2. If the leak is found, the dealership will replace the seal for no charge.
    3. If the dealer finds that the transfer case has undue wear on it, it will also be replaced at no charge.
How can I tell if I need this recall?

  • Theres 2 ways to go about this.. One is the Transfer Case Recall Page provided by Club DSM. This page will show you how to check for overspray around your driveshaft. You *SHOULD* check your transfer case fluids as well as tranny fluids once a month to make sure you arent low on either before driving.

The second method is to take your car in for inspection at your local friendly Mitsubishi dealership. When taking your car in for inspection, we recommend to push to have your transfer case replaced. This can be difficult and long procedure if you really want to get whats due to you.
Owners who do not get decent service should do the following: phone the Mitsu/Chryco and NHTSA telephone numbers, listed on your recall notice, to report the difficulty. Have them intervene on your behalf with the dealer. This may or may not work as you aren't ENTITLED to a transfer case replacement but you should be.

The phone number for Mitsubishi is 1-800-222-0037
