There was yet another Tesla Autopilot accident in Detroit, just a few days after news of the first Autopilot fatality. Involving a Tesla Model X, Albert Scaglione and his son-in-law Tim Yanke survived the crash. According to Detroit police, the Tesla Model X crashed and rolled over on the Pennsylvania Turnpike last Friday, as reported by the Detroit Free Press. With the first Tesla Autopilot accident under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the latest accident could lead to more official action.
Although the Detroit art gallery owner and his son were relatively unharmed during the accident, it raises serious questions about the Tesla Autopilot technology. According to most automotive experts, this second accident could turn up the heat on Tesla. Increased scrutiny into the Autopilot technology could lead to further safety measures and testing.
According to the official report from the Pennsylvania State Police, the Model X hit a guard rail and crossed over the concrete median. The median caused the Tesla electric SUV to flip over, until tumbling across it’s roof and landing in the middle eastbound lane. Although it’s not known to what extent the NHTSA will take action, the arena of autonomous car crashes is all new territory.
Some of the primary differences between this Tesla Autopilot accident and the fatal one that occurred in Florida involve the police. Although the Pennsylvania State Police did not comment, they did mention that the Model X owner, Scaglione will be cited for an infraction. Whether this will affect where the blame is placed will depend largely on the details, which we’ll share with you once they are released.
