The all new 2017 Mazda MX-5 RF debut in New York had been a long awaited one. The hardtop version of the incredibly balanced MX-5 had been anticipated for months now, and Mazda didn’t disappoint. Not only is the hard top version just as sexy and sleek, but it comes with a power targa roof.

We’ve followed the awesome MX-5 from the 2015 SEMA Show and loved every single variation, including the Speedster concept. And the new 2017 Mazda MX-5 uses a power roof that slides neatly into the rear of the Mazda roadster. The older Miata Power Retractable Hardtop version lacked this integration, and it’s one of the coolest new features of the new MX-5.

You aren’t losing that much trunk space in the new 2017 Mazda MX-5 RF either. In fact the trunk space on the Mazda is the same as in the standard soft top at 4.5 cubic feet.

The convertible Miata checks in at 2,332 lbs for the manual transmission, but Mazda did say that the 50-50 balance that the Miata is known for is still intact.

Mazda revealed the 2017 Mazda MX-5 RF, and the designation stands for Retractable Fastback. The new MX-5 is likely still powered by the flexible Skyactiv-G engine, which is rated at 155 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque. While there’s been talk of a turbocharged or supercharged model, Mazda doesn’t seem ready to add that as an option quite yet.
