The Toyota Supra has been and always will be a icon of 1990’s performance and aftermarket glory, a symbol that drove fanboys nuts and made tuners lick their chops. Toyota took away one of our prized favorites in 1998, stopping the glorious run of the 2JZGTE and the Fourth Generation Supra to focus on developing the company and putting support behind their other models.
This past year at the Detroit Auto Show, the Toyota FT-1 took everyone by surprise with an elegant swooping design and strikingly aggressive looks. Almost as soon as pictures began to leak out to the interwebs, were rumors of Toyota making the FT-1 concept a model in which to base the next-gen Supra off of.
And while we’ve been teased with rumors of a “replacement” Supra before, from the many “sporty” offerings that Toyota teased us with. Some may have found some residual success, but it wasn’t a stretch to say that Toyota had lost most of it’s motorsport following with the death of the MKIV Supra.
With the news of BMW and Toyota’s partnership growing past it’s obvious motorsport roots, Toyota made it official by announcing that the FT-1 would eventually become the next-gen Supra. It’s a great day for import enthusiasts everywhere as the FT-1 may become the new hallmark in import performance, as the next great sports car created by the Japanese automaker.
